スライド概要

Zoos and aquariums are where people can enjoy themselves while observing various creatures. However, merely observing the creatures casually does not lead to lasting memories of them. Some aquariums introduce animals by giving them names to encourage observation and enjoyment. Although such introductions help people develop an impression of the animals, they do not easily lead to lasting memories of the animals because it is challenging to remember the names. In this study, we focused on penguins with abdominal patterns and proposed a method to observe and search for penguins while drawing their patterns. In order to construct a dataset for penguin drawing analysis, we implemented a prototype system for drawing the pattern on a smartphone and conducted an experiment in which users watched videos or photos of penguins while drawing the pattern. We analyzed the similarity of the drawings and found that the drawings of the same penguin were highly similar to each other and that the drawings of the penguins with attractive patterns have a distinctive stroke order.

Introduction • Penguins in aquariums are often seen in large groups, leading us to view them collectively rather than as individuals. • If visitors can’t recall the penguins they've seen, the educational impact diminishes, and their likelihood of returning to the aquarium decreases. 4

6.

Introduction Personality Name We believe that active observation is important to make the observation memorable and interesting. Band Color Exhibits that draw attention to individual penguins (Sea Life Sydney) 6

7.

Method 01. Drawing an abdominal pattern. Help people to focus on the characteristics of the individual penguins and to become more attached to them. 02. Retrieve the name from the drawing. The names can be easily associated with the penguins, making them more memorable. 7

8.

The Importance of Active Observation There are several studies that use image recognition for individual identification. Even if the names are identified, the lack of user engagement makes it difficult to remember the information. 8

9.

Prototype system We created a prototype system for collecting drawing data to see if it is possible to search by drawing and analyzed penguin drawing data. 9

Discussion 01. Drawings of the same penguin displayed a notable similarity, suggesting that it’s possible to recognize penguins by their drawings. 02. Participants commonly drew abdominal patterns in a consistent manner, typically beginning from the upper left to downward. 03. Post-experiment questionnaires revealed many positive opinions, noting that drawing the abdominal patterns led to new insights and increased interest in penguins. 18

Summary Introduction Observation support is needed to enhance interest in and memory of penguins. Method A system for drawing the abdominal patterns of penguins and searching for their names. Result It is somewhat possible to search for names by evaluating the similarity of the drawings. Future work Improve and implement the system to investigate its effect on interest and memory. 19
