Before arranging help after a burst pipe
A burst pipe can leave you making decisions under pressure. Start with safety, then
gather enough information to explain the problem and compare the help offered.
Keep the first steps safe
Use the water shutoff only if you know where it is and can reach it without entering a
hazardous area. Keep people and pets away from wet areas near outlets, appliances or
electrical equipment. Do not enter standing water to reach a breaker or unplug
equipment; leave electrical assessment and isolation to qualified help. If there is
immediate danger, move to safety and contact local emergency services.
Do not use household fans or other electrical equipment in a wet area until a qualified
professional has confirmed it is safe. Avoid contact with water that may contain sewage
or other contamination.
Make a simple record
From a safe location, photograph the affected rooms and belongings. Note when you
noticed the leak, where the water appeared and whether the supply has been stopped.
Keep receipts and relevant messages. Ask your insurer what records and approvals it
needs; do not assume a particular repair or service will be covered.
Separate the repair from the cleanup
Ask who will repair the pipe and who will assess water damage. A plumbing repair does
not by itself show that wall cavities, flooring or insulation are dry. Ask how moisture will
be checked, what findings will be recorded and how the provider will decide whether
materials can be retained.
Request a written scope and estimate, including assessment charges, equipment costs,
possible additional work and the process for approving changes. Confirm who is
responsible for each part of the job. Ask which rooms remain usable and how children
and pets should be kept away from work areas.
A referral resource to review
Exclusivelysusan Restoration’s Flint water-damage guide describes a referral service,
not the contractor carrying out the work. Independent providers assess the damage,
perform the work and set their own prices. Confirm the provider’s identity, relevant
qualifications and written terms directly before agreeing to service.
